In this blog, we’ll explore the incredible journey of this selfless humanitarian and her enduring legacy.

Early Life and Calling

Mother Teresa

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, later known as Mother Teresa, came from a humble Albanian family.

From an early age, she displayed an unwavering commitment to helping others. At just 18, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland, where she received religious training.

In 1929, she set sail for India, a country that would become her lifelong home.

In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.

The primary aim of this religious order was to serve “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society.”

With only a few companions, she began her work in the slums of Calcutta, providing necessities and care for the needy.

Mother Teresa’s unyielding dedication led to the opening of hospices, orphanages, and centers for people with leprosy, transforming the lives of countless individuals.

Mother Teresa’s life and work were guided by a set of deeply held values and principles that drove her to serve the poorest of the poor and make a difference in the world. Some of her core values included:

  3. Selflessness: Mother Teresa lived a life of selflessness. She gave up her personal comfort, including living in humble conditions, to be closer to those she served. Her focus was on the needs of others rather than her own.
  4. Humility: Despite her fame and recognition, Mother Teresa remained remarkably humble. She considered herself a humble instrument in the hands of God and shied away from personal accolades or attention.
  5. Faith: Her strong faith in God and her Catholic faith were central to her life and work. She saw her calling as a mission from God and relied on her faith to find strength and purpose in her service.
  6. Simplicity: Mother Teresa embraced a simple and minimalist lifestyle. She believed that material possessions were not essential and often lived in austere conditions to better identify with the poor she served.
  7. Non-judgment: She had a non-judgmental approach towards others, regardless of their background, religion, or circumstances. She believed in showing Love and care to everyone without prejudice.
  8. Love: Love was the foundation of her work. She famously said, “Love cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service.”
  9. Dignity of Life: Mother Teresa believed in upholding the dignity of every human being, no matter how destitute or ill they might be. She treated each person she encountered with respect and kindness.
  10. Perseverance: Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles in her work, Mother Teresa persevered with unwavering determination. Her resilience and commitment to her mission were exemplary.
